Medell Briggs-Malonson, MD, MPH, MSHS
Senior Medical Director of Quality
Dr. Medell Briggs-Malonson, MD, MPH, MSHS is the senior medical director
of Quality at Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital. She is responsible
for providing clinical leadership in the development and measurement of
the hospital's strategic approach to quality and performance improvement
for the South Los Angeles facility. Since completing her medical degree,
Dr. Briggs has served as an emergency room physician in underserved communities.
She is also an assistant clinical professor in the Department of Emergency
Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California,
Los Angeles (UCLA) and the former emergency medicine quality officer for
the UCLA Faculty Practice Group.
Active in research, Dr. Briggs was the principal investigator for a National
Institutes of Health (NIH)/National Institute on Aging pilot study, "Exploring
Heart Failure Related Emergency Department Visits and Hospitalizations
Among African-Americans with Heart Failure." She continues to conduct
research in health system innovation, quality improvement processes, community-partnered
research methodologies and vulnerable populations.
Dr. Briggs spends much of her time working in the community with organizations
that focus on addressing health and social issues. She annually presents
her “Busting the Myths: Everything You Want to Know About Heart
Disease” health education lecture at a local South Los Angeles senior center.
Dr. Briggs received her undergraduate degree from UCLA, her medical degree
from Harvard Medical School, a Master of Public Health degree from Harvard
School of Public Health, and a Master of Science of Health Services degree
from the UCLA School of Public Health. She completed her emergency medicine
internship and residency at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.
Following her clinical training, Dr. Briggs was a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation
Clinical Scholar whose research focused on designing community-based health
promotion programs and developing novel health care delivery models to
improve the quality of health services delivered in medically underserved
communities. She is an Improvement Advisor certified by the Institute
for Healthcare Improvement and is trained in Lean healthcare methodologies.
Dr. Briggs is board-certified in emergency medicine and practices at UCLA
and Harbor-UCLA Medical Centers.
Dr. Briggs is married to John Malonson III, an IT business strategist and
president of several Los Angeles area IT groups including Blacks in Technology
and the Black Data Processing Association. They have two young sons.
