Community Engagement

Health beyond the hospital

Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital participates in and sponsors community events, and partners with multiple community organizations. We have also implemented several MLKCH initiatives aimed at empowering and educating the residents of South Los Angeles to better manage their health.

Community Programs

Some of our signature community engagement initiatives are:

  • You Can initiative – a school based mentorship and enrichment program with local LAUSD schools including Carver Elementary, Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary, Markham Middle School and King/Drew Magnet High School
  • Know Your Basics Community Health Initiative – to provide residents with information and resources to better manage their health; held at local shopping centers, farmers markets and senior centers
  • Childhood Wellness Fair with Watts/Willowbrook Boys and Girls Club
  • Heart Awareness Month Campaign with the American Heart Association
  • Community Art Collaborative – five community artists showcase their work at MLKCH
  • Triple Step Toward a Cure partnership
  • Watts/Willowbrook Boys and Girls Club Scholarship Program – 40 scholarships awarded at You Can Schools
  • Learning Center Health Education Campaign

Martin Luther King, Jr. Medical Campus

The new hospital is situated on the Martin Luther King, Jr. Medical Campus alongside several other high-quality facilities serving the healthcare needs of the community.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Medical Campus Partners

The MLK Medical Campus includes the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Public Health, which focuses on preventative care, and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Outpatient Center, both operated by the County of Los Angeles. The Martin Luther King, Jr. Outpatient Center provides outpatient services including general medicine, cardiology, dermatology, dentistry, geriatrics, HIV and AIDS, neurology, orthopedics and physical therapy, and mental health services through the Augustus Hawkins Mental Health Center.
