Maternal Child Health Services
Your pregnancy and birth is a special occasion for you and your family.
During your stay at Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital, ensuring
the health of you and your new infant is our top priority.
We provide that special touch with state-of-the-art technology and outstanding
medical care. Our maternity services offer the most highly qualified,
board-certified professionals who are trained in delivering modern and
exceptional maternal care. We provide a comfortable waiting room for visitors
with open visiting hours, and a Resource Center for visitors in our 1st
floor lobby area.
We have 24-hour, in-house coverage from the entire OB team, including obstetric
physicians and nurses, anesthesiology, and certified nurse-midwives.
Our specially trained nurses, who are quickly able to recognize any health
concerns that may require immediate interventions, will continually monitor
you and your baby’s progress. In addition, our nurses provide all
moms with the most current guidance and educational materials. We also
offer a state-of-the-art infant security system.
Our facility will be designated as a Baby-Friendly hospital, which includes
support and encouragement for exclusive breastfeeding, skin-to-skin care
(bonding and attachment), and couplet care (“rooming in” for
mom and baby to stay together). Everyone on our nursing staff has special
training in initiation and duration of breastfeeding and skin-to-skin.
All healthy newborn infants will be placed skin-to-skin with mom, uninterrupted,
for at least one hour. We also provide a designated quiet time between
2 p.m. and 4 p.m. to allow moms to breastfeed and bond with their infant.
Why Skin to Skin?
Peer-reviewed research shows that mothers and babies should be together,
skin-to-skin (baby naked, not wrapped in a blanket) immediately after
birth, as well as later. Skin-to-skin leads to a happier baby, with a
more stable and normal body temperature, a more stable and normal breathing
rate, and a more elevated blood sugar. Not only that, skin-to-skin contact
immediately after birth strengthens the baby’s immune system by
allowing the baby to be colonized by the same bacteria as the mother.
Comfortable Birthing Suites
Our birthing suites are large, private rooms with upholstered chairs, wood
furniture, and private showers. We also provide a comfortable sleeper
chair for your significant other or support person. We offer 6 large Labor
Deliver Recover and Postpartum (LDRP) rooms, a state-of-the-art operating
Room, and 12 large postpartum rooms. We practice “rooming in”
so mom and baby can be together at all times.
Birthing Suites are Family-Centered
When it’s time to welcome your little one into the world, most moms
prefer a relaxing, family-centered ambiance rather than a traditional
hospital atmosphere. The birthing suites at MLKCH are large, comfortable
and designed with family members in mind. Each LDRP room contains a sleeper
chair, and each postpartum room includes a pullout couch for your significant
other or overnight support person. Moms have the option of staying in
one room to labor, deliver, recover and postpartum.
We want our parents to feel special on this joyous occasion! Mom and significant
other will receive a special new birth food tray outfitted with a bottle
of sparkling apple cider, flute glasses, flowers and a special dessert.
Maternity Center Tours
MLKCH will hold a monthly baby shower where expectant moms can pre-register,
receive information, tour the facility, and participate in a raffle. We
also offer individual tours of the unit if needed. Please call 424.338.8617
to request a tour.
