Kaiser awards $2 million to expand obstetric unit

LOS ANGELES, CA (May 21, 2014)—Next year, families in South Los Angeles will be able to deliver their babies in the new Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital (MLKCH), opening in 2015. Kaiser Permanente donated $2 million to help the hospital expand its Obstetric (OB) unit. The funds will help add an additional C-section suite and increase the number of OB beds, allowing the hospital’s Maternity Department to double the number of deliveries it can support.

“We appreciate Kaiser Permanente’s support of our efforts to ensure the community has access to much-needed maternity services. These funds will help us achieve that goal,” said Dr. Elaine Batchlor, CEO, Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital. “The hospital will be a welcoming place for community residents to grow their families and we look forward to being a part of those special moments.”

The new Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital (MLKCH) is a private, nonprofit, safety-net hospital that will deliver high-quality, collaborative care to South Los Angeles and surrounding communities in partnership with the County of Los Angeles, University of California, and other community providers.
