Willowbrook, California, Nov. 9, 2019 – Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital (MLKCH) received the highest grade “A” for patient safety from the prestigious Leapfrog Group. The “A” rating is achieved by only one-third of hospitals nationwide.
The recognition is particularly notable as MLKCH is a small safety-net hospital that serves a largely low-income and underserved community.
“It’s a tremendous recognition of the high-quality care we provide and the excellence we insist upon,” said MLKCH CEO Dr. Elaine Batchlor. “And it’s incredibly meaningful to this community, which has been deprived of high-quality health care for so long.”
MLKCH opened in 2015, ending an 8 year period in which South LA had no hospital. It has since won state and national accolades for its cutting-edge technology, high patient satisfaction rates, and innovative approach to care. Earlier this year, MLKCH CEO Batchlor won the James Irvine Foundation Leadership Award and the Partners in Care Vision & Excellence in Healthcare Leadership Award.
Last month, Batchlor was elected to the National Academy of Medicine, one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine.
The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is a bi-annual evaluation of more than 2,600 hospitals nationwide on how well they protect their patients from errors, injuries, accidents and infections.
