Our top priority
We believe that every patient in every community deserves the best healthcare America can offer. Your MLKCH is more than your community hospital—we’re your award-winning community hospital.
Our Hall of Fame CEO
Dr. Elaine Batchlor, CEO of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital, has earned accolades from her peers in recognition of her decades of dedicated work improving the quality of care for South Los Angeles.
In 2019 she won the James Irvine Foundation Leadership Award, which honors “innovative, effective leaders whose breakthrough solutions to critical state challenges improve people’s lives, create opportunity, and contribute to a better California,” according to the foundation. In the same year, she was nominated to the National Academy of Medicine, one of the highest honors in the field of health and medicine.
In California, Batchlor makes regular appearances on the LA Business Journal's LA500 list, which honors the most influential leaders and executives in Los Angeles, as well as Becker's lists of top women leaders in health care. Becker's is the preeminent publication for the hospital industry.
Dr. Batchlor has twice been the commencement speaker at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health, is a member of the Zetema Project, won the Humanitarian of the Year Award from the Association of Black Women Physicians (ABWP) and received the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health Dr. Lester Breslow Lifetime Achievement Award. UCLA also inducted her into their Alumni Hall of Fame.
Dr. Batchlor is a strong advocate for health equity in state, national and international media. Most recently she discussed our "separate and unequal" US health system in the Milken Foundation's "Power of Ideas" and also appeared in a TED X talk on health disparities.
On The Maternity Honor Roll
Our hospital was included on the Cal Hospital Compare 2020 Hospital C-Section Honor Roll—a list of 141 hospitals in California that "have met or surpassed a federal target aimed at reducing Cesarean births (C-sections) for first-time mothers with low-risk pregnancies."
Most Wired Hospital
MLKCH is one of only 6.4% of hospitals in the nation that has achieved HIMSS‐7 – the highest level of electronic medical record keeping. For this reason, we have appeared repeatedly on CHIME's Healthcare’s “Most Wired.”
We achieved HIMSS Analytics Stage 6 for electronic medical records in 2016, one year after our hospital opened. No other hospital has ever achieved this level of tech savvy integration in its first year of operation.
Gold Seal of Approval
MLKCH has received The Joint Commission Gold Seal of Approval™, a recognized symbol of healthcare quality. This accreditation means that we demonstrate an ongoing commitment to monitoring and improving quality and patient safety.

The MLKCH Public Safety Department was recently awarded the Lindberg Bell Award for Excellence given by the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety Foundation. This prestigious award is given to only one hospital in the world each year. This recognition is presented to a facility which has established and administers an outstanding healthcare security and/or safety program. MLJCH joins the ranks of past winners like the Cleveland Clinic and Boston University Medical Center.
MLKCH is committed to high-quality care for all our patients. This means being proactive, acting quickly, and keeping our hospital and our equipment clean. We're proud to announce that we've been recognized for our efforts in this regard. We've been named a Sepsis Hero by The Sepsis Alliance.
